Top travel destinations for 2024 events

Paris, France is hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games July 26 through August 11, 2024. In a break from tradition, Paris is taking many sports out of stadiums and instead hosting competitions in the heart of the city. You could watch equestrian events in the gardens of Versailles, see elite swimmers racing in the Seine, or catch the first-ever Olympic break dancing competition at La Concorde. Allianz is proud to be a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic & Paralympic Movements.

Tahiti, French Polynesia is hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic surfing competition, in which competitors will ride the legendary Teahupo’o wave. If you want to see it, get your tickets! There’s only space for 600 onlookers (standing), although screen-viewing sites will be available.

Mazatlán, Mexico may be one of the best places to see the 2024 solar eclipse, which takes place on April 8. The eclipse has a long path of totality—meaning the band where you can see the sun fully blotted out—that stretches from the Pacific coast of Mexico to the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland. You have your pick of spots to see it, but given the high chance of clouds in April, Mexico or a Texas city like Austin or San Antonio may be your best bet.

Top 2024 destinations for adventure travelers

Kosovo is beginning to attract hikers and cyclists to its beautiful mountains and scenic countryside. Opening in July 2024 is the Trans Dinarica cycling route: It’s a 2,090-mile trail through the western Balkans that “spotlights mountain ranges, the Adriatic Sea and a gluttony of lakes and rivers while prioritizing the sustainable discovery of UNESCO sites, national parks and villages.”1

Antarctica was once only visited by the wealthy, adventurous few. Now, several cruise lines offer sailings to the southernmost continent, where you can see seabirds, whales, seals and penguins galore.

Sri Lanka recently opened the Pekoe Trail, a 186-mile trek through small villages, wild highlands, tea plantations and forests. It’s designed to take 22 days at an unhurried pace, with abundant opportunities to chat with locals, take pictures, and, of course, stop for a cup of tea.

Bhutan now offers tourists the chance to walk the 250-mile Trans Bhutan Trail. Dating to the 16th century, this trail fell into disrepair in the 1960s and only recently has been restored. The trail winds through mountain passes, rice paddies, rhododendron forests, remote villages and lively towns. It’s free to hike the trail, but international travelers must hire a local guide.

Mongolia has become a top destination of younger travelers who are weary of packaged, Instagram-ready trips. This country between China and Russia entrances with endless expanses of wild steppes, herds of wild horses, and ancient cities.

Top European destinations for 2024

Norway is rapidly becoming a favorite destination for its stunning beauty and cool climate. Consider Valencia instead, which was named Europe’s 2024 “green capital” for its sustainability efforts. Walk along the beaches, eat your fill of paella, and see contemporary art in the new Hortensia Herrero Art Center.

Austria has so much to offer this year — especially Vienna. Catch a concert at the House of Strauss, a new museum dedicated to the King of Waltz, Johann Straus. Learn about the city’s history at the just-remodeled Wien Museum. And don’t miss Schönbrunn Palace, the lavish summer residence of the Habsburg family.

Scotland is drawing travelers to the Cairngorms, its largest national park, where wildcats and beavers are being reintroduced, and to the moorlands and ruined castles of the far north. If you’re more of a city person, you’ll find plenty to do in Edinburgh.
