Ahhhh! The American South! Great weather, outrageously delicious cuisine, lovely hospitality and a slow pace of life. This is one region that's hard to beat, especially when it comes to beaches. From spots alongside the Atlantic Ocean to destinations overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, the South is not short on beautiful beaches. Add in all the history and culture associated with many of these beachside cities, and you have a solid list of places to enjoy a summer beach vacation. Just don't forget your sunscreen, because the sun is sure to be smiling over you during your stay.
The Outer Banks (pictured above) is one of the most exciting places in the Atlantic to simply ride waves. It's also a great spot to windsurf, take a four-wheel drive vehicle along the beach and explore shipwrecks while scuba diving. Within this chain of islands, there are numerous areas to stay, including Kitty Hawk, a place known for its delicious seafood and the Wright Brothers National Memorial (this is where the first successful airplane flight occurred). If fishing is your thing, the Avalon Fishing Pier, located in Kill Devil Hills, is a popular spot. In terms of lodging, choices are endless — you can stay at anywhere from a seaside villa or resort to a campground.
Within the continental United States, this is the southernmost city. And it's an absolute gem of a destination. There aren't enough adjectives to describe this place. It's pristine, enchanting, magnificent and more. Even the most pessimistic of souls stop and take notice of Key West's beauty. Smathers Beach is the choice spot, but know there is sand virtually everywhere in Key West. As soon as you arrive, you'll realize why Ernest Hemingway chose to call this place home, and you can even see how he lived at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Other sites, like the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory and bustling Mallory Square, guarantee you ample entertainment when you are finished sipping your cocktail on the beach.
There is a reason why oceanfront hotels, condos and campgrounds line Myrtle Beach: this town is in a prime location, and the Lowcountry cuisine is incredible. Not to mention the beach features some of the most comfortable sand in the world. Myrtle Beach is also famous for being a golfer's paradise, with courses such as Caledonia, a spectacular venue situated on an old rice plantation, and Dunes Golf and Beach Club, an indescribably stunning course. The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, a 1.2-mile long boardwalk that is the heart of the seaside action, boasts everything from oyster restaurants and casual pubs to surf shops and music concerts. Casinos and amusement parks are also very close to the beach. In short, this a destination that suits a range of folks, from young professionals to families and retirees. There's simply something for everyone.
It's hot in every sense imaginable in Miami, and no place represents the city's sizzling nature better than South Beach. Sandwiched between high-rise hotels and the mighty Atlantic Ocean, South Beach is a playground for those who love to soak up the finer things in life. Chill poolside with your favorite chilled cocktail at the Ritz-Carlton, or play volleyball on the beach. Shop for designer goods at the Lincoln Road Mall, and then enjoy some of the best Cuban food you'll find outside Cuba. If you get too hot, go for a dip in the ocean; the water here is made for a good swim. And if you ever need a break from just having fun, the area is full of cultural sites too. The Bass Museum of Art, for instance, rivals any of those you'll find in other major cities, and the Wolfsonian always has inspiring exhibitions on display.
Sweet home Gulf Shores, Alabama! Indeed, this gem beside the Gulf of Mexico is so splendid you may just think about unpacking your things and staying for good. First, Orange Beach, with its sparkling white sands, clear waters and laid-back vibes, is soul-soothing. Second, lodging choices are remarkably diverse, as everything from traditional hotels and motels to condos, houses and cabins can be rented for your stay. You could spend the day on a deep sea fishing excursion, or see how the town has long protected itself at historic Fort Morgan. For families, sites like the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, where you can learn about regional wildlife, and Waterville U.S.A, an 18-acre amusement park, offer plenty of entertainment options outside of lying low on the beach. And don't forget: When you get hungry, head to a local seafood shack and re-learn what fresh truly means.
There you have it. The great thing about the South is that, in addition to these five great locations, there are many more great beaches. This is undoubtedly the best region in the USA for a beach getaway, so enjoy all the choices and make the most of it. Before you go, purchase some travel insurance through Allianz Global Assistance. This way, you won't have to worry about any unlucky incidents spoiling your fun. Now start packing and start smiling. It's time for a beach vacation.
